The Meaning of Christmas

The origins of Christmas comes from the birth of Jesus and celebrating his birthday at Christ's mass. At least this is what the true story is supposed to be. Over the years, this has been turned into a day to celebrate a jolly, fat guy in a red suit. Today, we use it as a day to celebrate getting presents and breaking the bank in order to show how much we care about one another.
Now I am the first one to gladly receive a nice gift. As my Mother would say, "Oh, you shouldn't have...but I'm glad you did!" And I love finding just the right thing for those closest to my heart, I really do...In fact, I find it hard waiting until Christmas for them to open their gift because I am so excited at how well I did. But I have to wonder why should I feel obligated to bend over backward for those other people that I try to avoid most of the year (those who I only interact with solely because I'm related to them). This is why people find the holidays the most stressful time of year and why the Grinch stole it.
To me, the meaning of Christmas is to remember and show how much you love one another. Those that you really truly unabashedly love. For me, that means my family circle (Mom, Dad, Hubby, Brother, Grandmas and my family of friends). Sometimes that showing could be an expensive gift or it could be as simple as a great CD mix. Since I also have friends who aren't Catholic or even believe in organized religion, should they miss out on this blessed day of adoration and showering of gifts? I don't think so...therefore, I think there should be a day called Lovemas instead to celebrate all those people you love.
So if you are reading this, that means you are in my family circle and I wish you all the love and peace on the 25th and everyday.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza, Happy Festivus, Happy Ramadan, Happy New Year and happy, happy, Lovemas!!!
